Coaching in the News
"Coaching is an action-oriented partnership that, unlike psychotherapy which delves into patterns of the past, concentrates on where you are today and how you can reach your goals.”

After turning over the internationally-known school tour business he co-founded to his brother, Mark Julian is now turning his focus on helping people gain personal success. He recently started his own life-coaching business, Clear View Consulting, near his Fairfax Station home.

"Generally speaking, people want some sort of change," said Julian. Having a coach can help people make changes in their life the same way an athletic coach can help a sports player become better, he said. "Individuals come to coaching for the same reasons: improvement, results and success," said Julian.

Julian knows a thing or two about athletic improvement: he is currently working with a trainer whose  regular sessions include elite routines such as Cross Fit, the U.S. Navy Seal Fitness Requirements and the 300 Workout. He also enjoys martial arts such as boxing, Chin Na and Tae Kwon Do.

The Washington, D.C.-area native attended Washington-Lee High School in Arlington and the Corcoran School of Art in the District. He "fell in love" with the protected areas along the Occoquan River and moved to Fairfax Station in 1994 with his family.

In the 1960s and early 1970s, Julian began fly-fishing in local waters such as Burke Lake, Little Stony Creek and the Potomac River. In the 1980s he co-founded the Rusty Rats, a group of four anglers who go on fishing trips to places such as Yosemite National Park in California; The Frank Church Wilderness in Idaho; The Boundary Waters in Canada and The Cranberry Wilderness in West Virginia. Future adventures include a backpacking trip in Africa with his son, he said.

Other goals include writing: by March, Julian hopes to have finished a book about "fitness and the mind/body connection, from a coach's perspective," he said.

What made you want to start life coaching?
The quick answer is the rewards. Helping others to become on the outside, what they've grown to, on the inside, is what drew me to coaching. I've been consciously aware of this gap, in growth, for most of my life and like most people, I've had a mixture of success and failure in consciously managing it. Life Coaching is a process that addresses precisely that management. So now, I'm answering a calling to help others accomplish, that which others have so generously helped me to accomplish at various times in my life. I help empower people to get to where they want to be. Nothing could be more rewarding than that.

Why do people need a life coach? What are the most common reasons people turn to you?
As I mentioned above, it's about becoming, on the outside, what you've already grown to, on the inside. Those two don't always match up, because, as you change and grow inside, often your external life does not immediately reflect, or adapt to that growth. That becomes a form of what we call resistance. Without a coach, resistance can be a formidable block that can keep you stuck for a long, long time. With a trained coach, you convert that resistance and accelerate your evolution as a person. Compared to older methods of self-help and personal growth, coaching is practical, affordable and absolutely transformational. …Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative, resourceful and whole.

What were some challenges of starting your own business? Rewards?
When you believe, as I do, that you are 100 percent responsible for everything you experience in this life, then you are your own biggest challenge. The dirty little secret is that it's both a challenge and a reward. But to answer the question, I am my own biggest challenge.

As far as rewards go, I hardly know where to begin. I'm free to think, be and act pretty much as I please; when you come from that kind of freedom, the rewards are limitless. I suppose that, right now, nothing is more exhilarating or rewarding than moving with a client beyond a limiting belief or behavior and into a clear view of what is possible instead of what wasn't, just a moment before. That's where the growth is, where the fun is, and where the reward is, for me.

My Philosophy on Life Coaching and Business Coaching

I view life as that which is constantly in a state of becoming. As a human being, like any other, I can be aware of the human experience generally and intimately appreciate my own experience. Thanks to the magnificence of the human mind, body, and spirit, our knowledge is recorded, consumed, and converted at ever expanding rates. Wisdom solely survives and gets passed from age to age – accelerating our expansion and understanding in this existence.

Life coaching enables us to comprehend our role in this astounding process, offering infinite possibilities for each of us to choose and create our own experience. Here, we can acknowledge our individual magnificence, even as it unfolds in harmony with the greater magnificence of all that is becoming. You know it when you’re unfolding with the greater song of life: there is no sweeter sound than this!

Conversely, when you stand apart from life’s expansive song, the sharpness of contrast can grow from a random, off-key note to a dark symphony of seeming confusion and noise. Only you can hear it. Only you can feel it. Only you can change it.

We don’t always appreciate when it’s happening that - this is the very sound of creation itself! Our pain and suffering are the burdens of our knowledge and growth, held from becoming a part of our lives. When we let knowledge go to wisdom and express it in our lives, we lighten our load and can experience our own magnificence, once again, in harmony with all that is becoming!

To this, I was offered a clear view for my life – thus the name. Through it, I came to see that to serve myself was to continue in this work with others. It is with great joy, gratitude and humility that I offer my self-improvement coach and business consultant services to others that may be seeking harmony in life and of their own magnificent unfolding!
