Financial Coaching

We use lots of metaphors in coaching, and finance gives me an opportunity to combine two of my favorite things: fly fishing and money!

Money is like water in that it’s practically everywhere and where is exists in abundance, life seems to flourish! Let’s say that our planets great oceans, rivers, lakes and streams represent our access to fishing and that any fish we catch represents our harvest. It’s important to remember that just because you grew up fishing in the same lake at the same spot doesn’t mean that it’s the only place to fish. Look for creative income streams and places off the beaten path, because you never know what opportunities they can hold!

When you set an intention for financial success, you awaken dormant forces that attune you to opportunities and ready your reflexes to capitalize on them. In fishing, some say that timing is everything – and so too with money. If you are not attuned to the opportunities, your rod could be bent double and you never even knew you had one on the line! The first order of business then is to get clear on your intention and be alert to opportunities.

At the same time, a paradox exists here that is summarized in a saying by Dr Wayne Dyer, “Infinite patience brings instant results.” Once your intention is clearly established, just let it go! Enjoy the beautiful day and all the wonders of nature that surrounds you! Appreciate all that you have in this moment and trust yourself to act appropriately when the opportunity arises. This is not about competition, it’s about cooperation! Be like the fish that you are seeking. Find yourself enjoying the cool water and deep shade and just enjoy the flow!

Some years back when I first discovered that we had achieved a net worth in access of a million dollars, I was surprised to notice that among my first thoughts were, “Oh, that’s no big deal.” I quickly surmised that most of my neighbors and people much younger than I had accomplished just that and more. By comparing myself to others, I had robbed myself of acknowledging the success of one of my earliest intentions – to become a millionaire! So what if I couldn’t account for every decision or strategy that had brought us to this point? It had happened without my noticing - through our thoughts, intentions and the way we lived our lives! Eventually I began to notice the power of that ‘not noticing’ in a brand new way and have discovered an engine of prosperity that has changed my life – and it can change yours as well!

Of course, there are lots of details about fishing, just as there are about finances, but these basic principles can serve you well in both: set clear intentions, enjoy and appreciate the day, don’t be attached to the outcome and expect to haul in some whoppers!
